Nagpur: In a ghastly mishap, an elderly woman lost her life and her husband sustained serious injuries after being struck by a rashly-driven truck at Nagpur’s Kapil Nagar Square on Wednesday afternoon. After the tragedy, the trucker ran away leaving his ‘killer’ vehicle a few metres away from the spot.
The deceased, Madhuri Digambar Wankar (60) was a resident of Babadeep Nagar. With serious injuries, her husband Digambar Govind Wankar (63) was rushed to Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mankapur.
According to eye-witnesses, the Wankar couple was returning home on their scooter (MH31/AB-3429) after paying the electricity bill at the Kamgar Nagar Bill Payment Centre around 12.25 pm. Madhuri Wankar was riding pillion on her husband’s scooter. While her husband Digambar was negotiating a turn at Kapil Nagar Square, the recklessly-driven truck (CG04/NW-7592) hit their scooter from behind.
The Wankar couple fell off the scooter. The truck dragged Madhuri for several metres before running over her. The impact was so severe that she was killed instantaneously. Local residents quickly gathered at the scene expressing their outrage over the reckless driving. The driver of the truck fled the scene immediately after the incident but later surrendered himself at the police station.
Staff from Kapil Nagar Police Station led by PSI Avinash Khatke rushed to the spot. Traffic constables also arrived at the spot to regulate the vehicular traffic. Cops sent Madhuri’s body to Mayo Hospital for post-mortem and rushed injured Digambar to Max Super Special Hospital.
The ghastly mishap once again highlighted the pressing issue of road safety in the Kapil Nagar area with residents calling for strict enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future. PSI Khatke said that police have taken the trucker into custody and also detained the truck. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances leading to the mishap, he added.
