Nagpur: The 34-year-old woman whose body was found hanging from a tree in the Jaripatka area of Nagpur early this month turned out to be a case of murder.

Investigation by Jaripatka Police revealed that Nitu, mother of two daughters, was killed by her live-in partner Gangadhar Arjun Gharde (48) on March 2 by strangulation as he had a doubt that she was having illicit relations with another man. Gharde then hung her body from a tree in his residential premises to make it appear like a suicide case. To mislead the police, Gharde concocted a story that Nitu ended her life as she was disturbed after separation from her husband.

Initially, police registered an accidental death after recording Gharde’s statement. Nitu’s relatives told police that she was separated from her husband in 2017. She then started living with Gharde who was a painter by profession. In 2019, she told her parents that she would marry Gharde.

The post-mortem report revealed that Nitu was strangulated to death. Some injuries were also found on her body which suggested that there was a scuffle before she was strangled. Cops picked up Gharde immediately after receiving the autopsy report. During his interrogation, Gharde spilled the beans. He confessed to killing Nitu and concocted the story that she died by suicide.

Cops arrested Gharde on charges under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.
