Nagpur: A child prodigy is born in Nagpur. Shreenanda Shubhankar Deshkar, an 18-month-old toddler from Nagpur has amazed experts and parents alike with her remarkable ability to memorize and recall the names of various objects in both Marathi and English languages. Her extraordinary talent has earned her a place in the India Book of Records, and her story has captivated the world, according to a report in a local English daily.
The report says that Shreenanda grew up in a joint family of four generations and showed a fascination for books and pictures from a very young age. By the time she was just eight months old, she would leaf through newspapers every morning, looking for things to identify. Her mother saw her interest and bought her even more books and comics to explore. With a large family around her, Shreenanda had an endless stream of questions for each person. She would ask her grandfather about deities and her mother about animals. The little girl even slept with a book tucked in her arms.
It wasn’t until she was around 17 months old that her parents realized her unique abilities. Madhura, Shreenanda’s mother, a practicing architect, said that they were so accustomed to her reciting names of things that they hadn’t realized that it was a feat not all children could emulate. When she was among children of her age group, Madhura realized that Shreenanda was indeed special, and maybe they could get some sort of recognition for her unique ability.
Madhura got in touch with the India Book of Records, but was told that Shreenanda would have to break the record set by a 2.5-year-old child who had memorized 45-50 words to earn a record. Undeterred, the family was still thrilled to receive an ‘Appreciation’ category honour. Shreenanda featured in the India Book of Records (IBR) under the ‘Appreciation Category’ on April 8, and the family received the medal and citation on Tuesday, April 18.
Shreenanda’s remarkable talent for visually and verbally identifying the names of 156 different items in both Marathi and English languages has earned her this well-deserved recognition. She can identify 156 items across various categories such as household items, animals and birds, food items, body parts, Hindu deities, fruits, feelings and emotions, vegetables, and vehicles. Her parents also revealed that she can count from 1 to 20 in Marathi and 1 to 10 in English.
According to Shreenanda’s father, Shubhankar Deshkar, a businessman, whatever she has learned has been through fun and games activity. She is naturally curious about things and wants to know the name of everything that she comes across. They have never sat her down to memorize or identify things. She does it all on her own. She even calls them by their names!
The Deshkar family is overjoyed at this achievement and credits their success to the support of their family and well-wishers. They are also immensely grateful to PP Shri Jitendranath Ji Maharaj, Devnath Math Anjangaon Surji, for instilling in them the values of a united family and for showering their little one with blessings that made this feat possible. With such an exceptional talent and an unwavering passion for learning, the sky’s the limit for this remarkable little girl.
